2-Bromonicotinic acid (2BA) is a bioactive molecule that can be used as a predictive model for the mechanism of action of δ opioid receptor agonists. 2BA binds to the δ opioid receptor and activates it by increasing chloride ion flow across nerve cell membranes. This increases the permeability of cells, which leads to an influx of water molecules into the cell. In addition, 2BA causes an increase in amine production, which then reacts with chloride ions to produce hydrogen peroxide and free radicals. These free radicals can cause damage to DNA and proteins within the cell, leading to cancer or other diseases.
2BA is also very reactive and can react with butyllithium, hydrochloric acid, or water molecules to form bromide ions.
