Trans-1,2-Bis(perfluoro-n-butyl)Ethylene (TFE) is a fluorinated polymer that has been shown to enhance the oxygen transport properties of hemoglobin. TFE is used as a blood substitute for patients with congenital heart disease and in those who are at risk for heart attacks. The use of TFE has been shown to reduce the risk of restenosis following angioplasty. TFE is an antimicrobial agent that can be used as a coating on medical devices and implants to prevent bacterial growth. Trans-1,2-Bis(perfluoro-n-butyl)Ethylene has also been shown to have DNA template activity, which can be useful for polymerase chain reaction or radiation therapy.
