This intermediate then decomposes into hydrogen chloride and a chlorinated hydrocarbon. The reaction can be catalyzed by an enzyme or by adding hydrochloric acid, hydroxyl group, or dipropyl ether. 2-Chloro-1-phenylethane has been shown to cause neuronal death in rats when injected into the brain at high doses.
