Cerium dioxide (CeO2) is a nanomaterial that has been studied extensively for its ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species and improve oxidative injury. Cerium dioxide nanoparticles have been shown to be effective in wastewater treatment, where they can remove organic contaminants. CeO2 also has biological properties that are dependent on the concentration of CeO2. At low concentrations, it can exhibit antioxidant activity, while at high concentrations it can inhibit mitochondrial membrane potential and enzyme activities. Cerium dioxide is also biocompatible with polymer coatings and cerium oxide nanotubes. The optimum concentration for CeO2 is 0.1-0.5 mg/mL (insoluble in water).
