2-Chloro-4-aminopyridine (2C4AP) is an antimicrobial agent that can be used to treat a number of bacterial infections. 2C4AP is an intermediate in the synthesis of podophyllotoxin, which is a cytotoxic natural product. It has been shown that the reaction of 2C4AP with chlorine and stearic acid yields a polymeric matrix that can be chromatographically separated into its two components. This reaction was found to take place at acidic pH, as well as in the presence of hydrogen chloride gas as a catalyst. The structural analysis of this compound revealed hydrogen bonding and covalent bonding between the chlorine atom and the amine group.
