2-Chloro-4-nitropyridine-N-oxide is a picolinic acid derivative that has been used as ancillary in devices to measure quantum efficiency, and in the development of new ligands for δ-opioid receptors. Picolinic acid is a natural product found in fruits and vegetables which inhibits the production of nitric oxide, an inflammatory molecule that contributes to neuropathic pain. It also inhibits the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and can be used to treat medical conditions such as diabetes, stroke, and heart disease. 2-Chloro-4-nitropyridine-N-oxide has been shown to inhibit the production of picolinic acid by reacting with methylamine in picolinic acid N-oxide. Nitro compounds are thermodynamically unstable but can be stabilized by conjugation with amines or amino acids.
