Cloransulam is a growth regulator that inhibits the synthesis of proteins in plants by inhibiting the activity of key enzymes. It is an active substance used to control weed growth, and has been shown to be effective against velvetleaf and other weeds. Cloransulam is selective for monocotyledonous plants and does not inhibit the growth of dicotyledonous plants such as cotton, soybean, or tomato. Cloransulam binds to the ribosomes in plant cells and blocks protein synthesis by interfering with chain reactions catalyzed by ribosomal RNA. This inhibitor also has a negative effect on the dry weight of plants due to its inhibition of chlorophyll production. Cloransulam can be used as a herbicide in agriculture and horticulture, but may also have adverse effects on soil quality when applied at higher concentrations or for prolonged periods.
