5-(Chloromethyl)dihydrofuran-2(3H)-one is an organochlorine compound. It is a lithium salt that is used as a catalyst in the production of polyurethanes. It is also used as a transition metal halide catalyst in the synthesis of organic compounds with alkali metal or alkaline earth metal halides, such as LiBr and CaBr. 5-(Chloromethyl)dihydrofuran-2(3H)-one has been shown to be an efficient catalyst for the production of 4-pentenoic acid from ethylbenzene.
