Creatine phosphate is an important molecule in the energy metabolism of all cells. It is stored in the form of creatine, which can then be converted to phosphocreatine by ATP-dependent creatine kinase. Creatine phosphate is also involved in the regulation of pH and calcium concentration. Creatine phosphate has been shown to increase cardiac contractility and reduce myocardial oxygen consumption. Creatine phosphate may also be a useful marker for cardiac damage following myocardial infarcts. Creatine phosphate levels are increased in heart tissue following myocardial infarcts, but decreased following atrial fibrillation or congestive heart failure. The enzyme activities of adenylate system enzymes such as adenylate kinase and pyruvate kinase are reduced, while those of the creatine kinase are increased after a myocardial infarct. A sample preparation method that includes acid complexing with ammonium oxalate has been used to measure creatine phosphate levels in heart
