L-Canavanine inhibits the growth of leukemic cells, and blocks the formation of DNA by binding to it. The compound also has antioxidative properties. L-Canavanine binds to the active site of protein kinase C (PKC), which is an enzyme that plays a role in cancer cell proliferation and differentiation. This binding prevents PKC from phosphorylating other proteins, blocking various cellular processes. L-canavanine also binds to dna and alters its structure, preventing replication. L-Canavanine has been shown to have anti-cancer effects when administered to mice with leukemia, but can be toxic at high doses. It is not effective against non-malignant cells, such as those found in skin or muscle tissue.
