Cetylpyridinium chloride is an inhibitor of these pumps, which could be used to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance. It has been shown to inhibit multidrug efflux pumps in a number of different bacteria, including Enterobacter cloacae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. Cetylpyridinium chloride has also been shown to inhibit the growth of wild-type strains and antibiotic-resistant strains of Escherichia coli through the use of chemiluminescence and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy methods. The antibacterial activity for cetylpyridinium chloride has been shown to be effective against both Gram-positive bacteria and Gram-negative bacteria.
