5-Chloro-2-hydroxybenzophenone is a molecule that has been extensively studied for its structural properties. It is a colorless solid with an unpleasant odor and melts at 203°C. 5-Chloro-2-hydroxybenzophenone reacts with phosphorus pentachloride to form the phosphorodichloridate anion, which is a good chlorinating agent. The chloride ion of this molecule can be replaced by other halogens such as fluorine, bromine and iodine. This molecule reacts with uv light to generate free radicals, which are highly reactive molecules that can cause damage to cells or DNA. 5-Chloro-2-hydroxybenzophenone has been shown to have acute toxicities in both rats and mice, although these effects were reversible upon cessation of exposure.
