(S)-4-Chloro-3-hydroxybutyric acid is the major metabolite of chlorobenzene, a pollutant that is released into the environment and can be found in water. (S)-4-Chloro-3-hydroxybutyric acid is toxic to humans and animals, and has been shown to cause adverse effects on the central nervous system and liver. The toxicity of this substance is due to its ability to inhibit serine protease activity. The metabolism occurs spontaneously in environmental samples, but the reaction yield decreases with increasing pH. This compound also reacts with sulfate ions at high pH, forming a mixture of products that includes bisulfate and hydrogen sulfate. The formation rate of (S)-4-chloro-3-hydroxybutyric acid increases as temperature increases, while its reaction rate decreases with temperature increase. As such, it is kinetically unstable at high temperatures.
