Cadmium chloride is a chemical compound that belongs to the group of metal halides. It is used in biological studies and has been shown to be cytotoxic at high concentrations. Cadmium chloride has been reported to have significant effects on brain functions, but it is not clear if these effects are due to its ability to bind with proteins or its ability to inhibit DNA synthesis. The cadmium-DNA complexes may play an important role in the development of cancer. This compound has also been used as a therapeutic agent in vitro, specifically for the treatment of leukemia cells and lymphoma cells. Cadmium chloride is usually dissolved in benzalkonium chloride (BAC) before being added to cell cultures because BAC prevents cadmium from forming precipitates with other compounds present in the culture medium and prevents cadmium toxicity.
