This compound has been shown to form exciplexes with thymine bases in a nonpolar solvent, which are formed when two or more molecules are held together by weak electrostatic forces. The stability of this complex depends on the redox potential of the molecule. 9-Cyanophenanthrene also forms a stable complex with dna duplexes in aqueous solution at high chloride concentrations, changing the conformation of the duplexes and leading to strand breakage.
