Captan is an organochlorine fungicide that has been used for decades to control plant diseases. It blocks the production of energy in a cell by inhibiting mitochondrial function. Captan also has genotoxic effects, which can lead to mutations and cancer. The cytotoxicity of captan is significant when compared to other fungicides and it is usually applied at an optimum concentration. Captan is toxic to humans and animals, and may cause damage to the skin, eyes, respiratory tract, liver and kidneys. Captan is not considered carcinogenic but it does have mutagenic properties. It acts as a DNA template when interacting with other chemicals or enzymes in the body. Captan can inhibit dna synthesis by preventing the enzyme ribonucleotide reductase from converting ribonucleosides into deoxyribonucleosides and this leads to inhibition of protein synthesis.
