Clobetasone 17-butyrate is a corticosteroid that is used for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease. It is a prodrug that undergoes rapid and extensive metabolism in vivo to form the active metabolite clobetasol 17-propionate. The chemical stability of clobetasone 17-butyrate allows it to be stored at room temperature, which makes it an ideal candidate for use in developing countries. Clobetasone 17-butyrate has been shown to exhibit antiinflammatory activity, with statistically significant differences when compared to placebo.
