It binds to the active site of the enzyme succinate dehydrogenase, preventing the conversion of succinate to fumarate. Clopyralid also has a synergistic effect with picolinic acid, which is found in plants and can be used as an analytical method for clopyralid. Clopyralid toxicity studies have been carried out using a model system that simulates wastewater treatment and plant physiology. This chemical was found to be non-toxic to plants at concentrations up to 10 ppm, but it was toxic to algae at concentrations of 1 ppm and higher. Its toxicity profile varies depending on the type of organism being tested.
