Beschreibung

Clotrimazole is a broad-spectrum antifungal agent that inhibits the synthesis of ergosterol, a constituent of fungal cell membranes. It has been shown to be effective against Candida glabrata and other gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including Staphylococcus aureus. Clotrimazole also has anti-cancer properties, inhibiting the growth of certain cancer cells by interfering with DNA synthesis. It is not active against Aspergillus or Cryptococcus neoformans. Clotrimazole is used in a controlled-release preparation to maintain an optimum concentration in the skin over an extended period of time. Clotrimazole can also be used as an adjunct in the treatment of vaginal candidiasis or vulvovaginal candidiasis caused by Candida albicans.
