6-Cyanoquinoxaline-2,3-dione is a neurotoxin that binds to the amino acid receptor on neurons. It is an extracellular agent that inhibits glutamate neurotransmission and has a cytotoxic effect on retinal neurons. 6-Cyanoquinoxaline-2,3-dione has been shown to be expressed in certain regions of the brain and spinal cord, and it may have a role in regulating pain transmission. It can also be used as a marker for identifying nerve cells in tissue sections. 6-Cyanoquinoxaline-2,3-dione has been shown to inhibit the uptake of potassium ions by neurons, which may contribute to its neurotoxicity.
