Cycloserine is a drug that belongs to the class of diketopiperazines. It is an antibiotic used in the treatment of tuberculosis, as well as other bacterial infections. Cycloserine inhibits protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit and inhibiting peptide bond formation. Cycloserine is also known to cause transfer reactions in some patients and can be toxic to the central nervous system at high doses. The impurities found in cycloserine are purpurea (impurity A) and functional groups (impurity B). Impurity A can cause a transfer reaction with cardenolide, which is an anti-inflammatory agent. Impurity B has been shown to inhibit acyl transfer activity, which may contribute to its toxicity.
