The compound inhibits the production of fatty acids, which are important for tumor development. 3-Cyanoindole also inhibits the growth of thp-1 cells in an oxygen-depleted environment. 3-Cyanoindole has been shown to be effective against hypoxic tumor cells in a reaction vessel. It has also been shown to have x-ray crystal structures that can be used for further study. This molecule is synthesized from the reactants methanesulfonic acid, benzaldehyde, and nitroethane by reacting them with a base such as sodium hydroxide or potassium tetrachloroplatinate at a temperature of -78°C.
