This compound has been shown to exhibit antimicrobial activity against bacteria by inhibition of bacterial cell growth through inhibition of the synthesis of proteins essential for cell division. Cinnamaldehyde also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties by inhibiting prostaglandin synthesis. The antimicrobial effects of cinnamaldehyde are due to its ability to bind to the enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase, which prevents the conversion of alcohols into aldehydes. Cinnamaldehyde can be found in many natural compounds such as cinnamic acid and eugenol.
