It can also be prepared from carbonyl chloride and iodine, or by the reaction of a metal hydroxide with hydroiodic acid. 2-Chlorotoluene is used as a catalyst for analytical methods such as gas chromatography and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, but it has not been shown to have any utility in bacterial cell systems. The most common use of 2-chlorotoluene is industrially in the synthesis of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and dyes.
