Cefathiamidine is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that has been used to treat infections caused by bacteria, such as tissue infection and septicemia. It also has been used in combination with other antibiotics to treat infections caused by vancomycin-resistant enterococci. Cefathiamidine is a prodrug that is activated through hydrolysis of the ester linkage between the cephalosporin and p-aminobenzoic acid moieties. The reactants are mixed in an aqueous solution containing sodium carbonate at pH 10.5 followed by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and synchronous fluorescence measurements. The resulting data are then evaluated using Langmuir adsorption isotherms to determine the process optimization parameters for cefathiamidine production.
