o-Cresol is a phenolic compound that is used as an intermediate in the production of glycol ethers. It is also used in wastewater treatment and analytical methods. o-Cresol can be absorbed through the skin and has been shown to have toxic effects on liver tissues. The toxicity of o-cresol may be due to its ability to inhibit the enzymes involved in metabolic pathways such as glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, and glycogenolysis. It is also able to inhibit the activity of certain enzymes by binding to their active sites. This behavior has been observed using kinetic data from locomotor activity studies with mice. o-Cresol was found to have a low potential for bioaccumulation and acute toxicity, but it has been shown to cause chronic toxicity following repeated exposure.
