Cadmium sulfide is a compound of cadmium and sulfur. Cadmium sulfide has been used as a pigment and an optical sensor. It is also used in the manufacture of redox potential sensors and fluorescence probes for detection of DNA damage. Cadmium sulfide is a redox active compound that has shown to have genotoxic effects in vivo and can be used as a fluorescent probe for DNA damage. Cadmium sulfide particles have been used as a thermal expansion sensor with zirconium oxide, which can be identified by synchronous fluorescence. This material has been studied extensively in mitochondrial membrane potential research, due to its strong response to changes in the membrane potential.
