Beta-cryptoxanthin is a carotenoid that belongs to the class of small-molecule drugs. It is naturally found in plants and animals. Beta-cryptoxanthin has been shown to have antioxidant properties. This compound has been shown to inhibit lipid oxidation and protect against skin cancer induced by ultraviolet light or carcinogens. Beta-cryptoxanthin is also able to inhibit the growth of bacteria, such as methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and fungi, such as Candida albicans. Beta-cryptoxanthin may also be protective against cardiovascular disease by reducing platelet aggregation and lowering cholesterol levels.
