4-Chloro-4'-hydroxybiphenyl is a congener of the synthetic estrogenic compound 4-hydroxybiphenyl. It has been shown to be an effective inhibitor of tyrosinase, which is responsible for the production of melanin in the skin. It inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in vitro and in vivo. The major metabolite of 4-chloro-4'-hydroxybiphenyl is the hydroxy derivative, which binds to DNA and causes mutations. This leads to cancer cells that are resistant to therapy with drugs such as tamoxifen or cisplatin.
