It has been shown to have tuberculostatic activity in mice, inhibiting the growth of Mycobacterium tuberculosis by binding to the pyrazole ring of mycolic acid and blocking the formation of a hydrogen bond. 2-Cyanoethylhydrazine also inhibits bacterial growth by binding to methyl ketones and other compounds that are expressed by Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The compound type is heterocyclic, consisting of an amide group and a heterocycle, which may be due to its ability to bind to inorganic acids such as sodium carbonate.
