Cyrtopterinetin is a natural compound found in plants and fungi. It has been shown to have cytotoxic effects on epithelial cells, which may be due to its ability to induce apoptosis. Cyrtopterinetin can also inhibit the mitochondrial membrane potential and induce an inflammatory response that results in bowel disease. It also inhibits the production of pro-apoptotic protein, leading to neuronal death. A polymerase chain reaction (PCR) study using human serum showed that cyrtopterinetin inhibits the transcription of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which is associated with inflammation and autoimmune diseases.
