The reaction is carried out at high temperature and pressure. Alternatively, caronic anhydride can be prepared by the hydrolysis of ethyl acetoacetate in the presence of l-tartaric acid and hexane. Caronic anhydride is soluble in organic solvents such as benzene, chloroform, dichloromethane, diethylether, dimethylformamide (DMF), tetrahydrofuran (THF), and toluene.
