2,3,4-Trichlorobiphenyl is a diphenyl ether that is used in the manufacturing of polychlorinated biphenyls. It can be found in soil and water as well as in the blood of people who have been exposed to this chemical. 2,3,4-Trichlorobiphenyl inhibits the activity of cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are important for detoxifying chemicals from the body. This inhibition leads to an accumulation of toxic substances in the body and has been shown to induce carcinogenic effects. 2,3,4-Trichlorobiphenyl has also been shown to be potent inducers of DNA damage by binding to DNA and causing strand breaks. This chemical may also cause oxidative stress by reducing glutathione levels and inhibiting antioxidant enzymes such as catalase and superoxide dismutase.
