This reaction has been shown to be nucleophilic and proceeds well at room temperature. The reaction time can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of ethylene acetal. 2,3-Dimethyl-4-nitropyridine N-oxide is an n-oxide and can easily be reduced to its corresponding amine by thiosemicarbazide. It also reacts readily with chloromethylation reagents or irradiation to yield chloromethylated polystyrene. The use of 2,3-dimethyl-4 nitropyridine N oxide in this process reduces environmental pollution caused by chlorinated solvents.
