2,3-Dimethyl-4-nitropyridine-N-oxide is a compound that is used in the manufacture of chloromethylated polystyrene. It reacts with ethylene acetal to form the corresponding amine. This reaction has been shown to be nucleophilic and proceeds well at room temperature. The reaction time can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of ethylene acetal. 2,3-Dimethyl-4-nitropyridine N-oxide is an n-oxide and can easily be reduced to its corresponding amine by thiosemicarbazide. It also reacts readily with chloromethylation reagents or irradiation to yield chloromethylated polystyrene. The use of 2,3-dimethyl-4 nitropyridine N oxide in this process reduces environmental pollution caused by chlorinated solvents.
