• Beschreibung: 4,6-Dihydroxypyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine is a xanthine derivative that is used as a therapeutic agent. It has inhibitory properties against xanthine oxidase and other enzymes. 4,6-Dihydroxypyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine inhibits the activity of xanthine oxidase by covalent bonding to the iron atom in the enzyme's active site. This binding prevents the conversion of hypoxanthine to xanthine and subsequently prevents the conversion of xanthine to uric acid. The resulting accumulation of hypoxanthine can lead to bowel disease. 4,6-Dihydroxypyrazolo[3,4-d]pyrimidine has also been shown to be toxic when administered orally in large doses or injected intravenously in small doses because it binds to matrix proteins and causes epidermal necrosis.
