1-Dodecyne is a molecule that belongs to the group of aliphatic hydrocarbons. It has an optical property called "birefringence" that can be seen by polarized light. 1-Dodecyne has been shown to react with ethylene diamine in a metathesis reaction to form two new products and release ammonia gas. The mechanism for this reaction is not fully understood, but it is believed that the hydroxyl group on the dodecyne interacts with the amine group on the ethylene diamine, forming a hydrogen bond. 1-Dodecyne also reacts with light exposure to form a chemical species called 9,10-anthracene. This reaction may occur when 1-dodecyne absorbs energy from photons and then releases energy as light emission at a longer wavelength.
