This inhibition leads to the accumulation of diphosphate and deoxyribonucleotides, which are necessary for DNA synthesis. 2,4-Dimethyl-5-nitropyridine was found to be more potent than hydroxyurea as an inhibitor of cellular growth in vitro and cancer cell lines in vivo. The potency of 2,4-dimethyl-5-nitropyridine can be attributed to its ability to bind very tightly with ribonucleotide reductase and form a stable complex.
