Escitalopram oxalate is a synthetic drug that is the active ingredient in Lexapro. Escitalopram oxalate is used to treat major depressive disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, and panic disorder. It is a racemic mixture of two enantiomers, 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-1-(4-fluorophenyl)-1,3-dihydro-5-isobenzofurancarboxamide and 1-[3-(dimethylamino)propyl]-1-(4-methoxyphenyl)-1,3-dihydro-5-isobenzofurancarboxamide. Escitalopram oxalate binds reversibly to the serotonin transporter on the presynaptic cell membrane and increases serotonin concentration in the synapse.
