Dithiopyr is an herbicide belonging to the group of sulfonylurea herbicides. It inhibits plant growth by blocking photosynthesis and is used as a pre-emergent, post-emergent, and desiccant herbicide. Dithiopyr has been shown to cause significant interactions with other drugs in the same risk groups, including other herbicides. Chronic exposure to dithiopyr may lead to kidney damage and increased risk for chronic kidney disease. Clinical studies have shown that chronic consumption of dithiopyr can lead to a decrease in glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and increased risk for end stage renal disease. Dithiopyr also causes cell death by hydrolysis of cell membranes through its ability to cleave phospholipids at the sn-2 position.
