The compound spontaneously undergoes bond cleavage to give the dibromo derivative followed by oxidation with aqueous hydrogen peroxide. 2,5-Dibromothiophene has been shown to have photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation. This compound functions as a monomer in the polymerization of polythiophenes. 2,5-Dibromothiophene can also be used in palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions with azasetron hydrochloride to form x-ray crystal structures and nmr spectra.
