It also inhibits cancer cell proliferation through inhibition of DNA synthesis and protein synthesis, as well as induction of apoptosis. 3'-Deoxy-3'-fluoro-isocytidine is phosphorylated by ribonucleotide reductase in the erythrocyte to yield its active form, deoxycytidine monophosphate (dCMP).
