Diethylphosphine is a chemical compound that is used as an antimicrobial agent. It is a chelate ligand that binds to metals and forms channels with alternating positive and negative charges. These channels inhibit the growth of bacteria by removing their carbon source and inhibiting the formation of hydrogen chloride. Diethylphosphine has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on bacterial growth, even in the presence of chloride ions in concentrations up to 10%. This chemical also has a detergent-like effect, which may be due to its ability to form hydroxyl groups in the presence of water. The chemical's nmr spectra provide information about its structure, while chemical ionization mass spectroscopy can be used to identify it. Diethylphosphine is also a semiconductor with a band gap of 1.5 eV, making it useful for semiconductor applications such as nanoelectronics and photovoltaics.
