Pilosine is a fluorescent derivative of histidine that is found in the genus Pilosa. It has been shown to be a substrate for epiisopiloturine, an antibiotic that inhibits bacterial growth by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. Pilosine also has clinical relevance and can be used as an alternative to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) because it does not show any signs of cytotoxicity or genotoxicity. Studies have shown that pilosine can inhibit COX-2 enzyme activity and thus reduce inflammation. Pilosine has been synthesized and profiled using chromatographic methods with cell culture assays on the effects of this compound on cellular viability.
