The diethyl ester form of this compound is especially reactive with peroxide and trifluoride. Diethyl3,5-pyridinedicarboxylate has been shown to react with Ca2+ ions to produce pyridinium ions and inhibit the uptake of Ca2+ by the erythrocytes.
