3,5-Dimethyl-1,2,4-trithiolane is an antibacterial agent that belongs to the group of disulfides. It is a white or light yellow crystalline solid that is soluble in organic solvents and insoluble in water. Disulfides are used as a preservative in food chemistry because they inhibit the growth of bacteria by disrupting their cell membranes. 3,5-Dimethyl-1,2,4-trithiolane has been shown to have antibacterial activity against resistant strains of bacteria. It binds to fatty acids on the bacterial cell membrane and inhibits the synthesis of proteins essential for growth and division. The molecular structure of 3,5-dimethyl-1,2,4-trithiolane contains sulfurs which react with aldehydes found in fatty acids to create disulfides.
