DMAE can also be used to help treat herpes simplex virus infections. The mechanism of action for this drug is not well understood, but it may work by blocking the transport of glutamate into cells. Dimethylaminoethanol may also inhibit the synthesis of fatty acids or react with amines to form nitrosamines that are carcinogenic.
