Dimethylsulfamoyl chloride is an inhibitor of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. It has been shown to inhibit the activity of two enzymes, sulfamoyl-coenzyme A synthetase and acetyl-CoA synthase, which are involved in the synthesis of glutathione. Dimethylsulfamoyl chloride may be useful in the treatment of autoimmune diseases and congestive heart disease. This chemical also binds to nitrogen atoms that have been incorporated into proteins in place of sulfur atoms. The binding slows down the rate at which these proteins are broken down by proteases, leading to a longer half-life for these proteins and increased efficacy for their biological functions.
