1,3-Dimethylbenzene is a chemical compound that is used as a solvent and for the treatment of wastewater. 1,3-Dimethylbenzene can be used to measure enzyme activities in bacteria. It has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on wild-type bacterial strains, but no effect on mutant bacterial strains. 1,3-Dimethylbenzene is metabolized by aerobic bacteria to acetate and formate through the oxidation of fatty acids. The rate of metabolism increases with increasing concentrations and time periods. The redox potential for this reaction is high enough for 1,3-dimethylbenzene to act as an oxidation catalyst.
