2,3-Dinitrotoluene (2,3-DT) is a glycol ether that is used as an industrial solvent and intermediate. It is genotoxic and has been shown to cause renal cell cancer in rodents. 2,3-DT has been shown to be genotoxic when tested with the Ames Salmonella/microsome assay, which detects mutagenicity by measuring the ability of a chemical to induce mutations in bacteria. 2,3-DT also causes DNA breaks and chromosomal aberrations in mammalian cells. This chemical has been shown to be carcinogenic in animal models and may pose a risk for human exposure through inhalation or ingestion.
